Odinyrus—One thing I learned about the restaurant space is that everyone turns rock and roll in it. I suppose it’s not surprising given it’s heat-based, there are knives flung about, and the hours are ungodly. Your piece is a great reminder.
Indeed! And not everyone does so, just the ones we remember. Plenty wash out so quickly their name and face is forgotten. But for those we held the line and floor with, the camaraderie is glorious and long lasting. It is an awful and awesome business to be a part of, and I regret only that I didn’t cherish the moments more fully with those I had the privilege to be in the weeds with.
I still pull bar shifts at a VFW these days, and I strive to embrace each moment to the fullest. Perhaps I should repost this stack as my contribution to the rufo rightosphere debate currently raging, lol
